Context

Your course exam is in 3 weeks. Today you sit a dress rehearsal: 30 minutes to write an essay on a fresh prompt (same topic, harder angle), zero AI, real time pressure. You get 5 minutes beforehand to identify one critical gap from your baseline essay and use AI to close it. Then the timer starts. After you write, two examiners score your paper using the same rubric they will use on your real exam. In the debrief, they ask you to defend the paper and explain whether your revision work actually transferred—or whether you fell back to old patterns.

Mission

Use AI to revise one critical gap, then sit a solo no-AI exam under time pressure. Your exam score and an examiner-signed mastery sheet prove whether the revision work transferred.

Finish Line

A solo paper score (graded on exam conditions, timed, no AI) plus an examiner-signed mastery sheet recording what transferred.

  • Candidate

    You sit the solo exam. You own your revision decision and your paper. The examiners judge the transfer.

    • Before the exam (5 minutes): Identify one critical gap from your baseline essay. Ask: "Which criterion would swing my score the most?" Then spend 3 minutes using AI to close it (paste draft, ask a targeted prompt, document what you kept).
    • During the exam (30 minutes): Write continuously on a fresh prompt in your course topic. No notes, no AI, no phone. Aim to finish in 28 minutes so you have 2 minutes to proofread.
    • After the exam: Score your own paper against the rubric (independent, honest). Defend the paper and your revision work in a 2-minute debrief: name what transferred and what you are still weak on, with evidence from the paper itself.
  • Examiner

    You grade the solo exam and ask probing questions in the debrief. You hold the standard.

    • Score the candidate's exam paper using the published rubric (4 criteria, 100 points). Write one sentence per criterion explaining your score (no negotiation with the other examiner).
    • During the 2-minute debrief, ask 2–3 follow-up questions that test understanding: "You used Claude to [fix], can you name that move and explain why you kept it?" Listen for whether the candidate understands the principle or just parroted the feedback.
    • Sign the mastery sheet with a one-sentence summary: name one thing that transferred and one thing that is still weak. This is the artifact that walks out.
  • Observation Coach

    You watch the exam and debrief from the side. You spot signs of transfer or reversion.

    • During the pre-exam triage (5 minutes): Ask the candidate "Which gap are you closing?" and "What will you ask AI?" Then step back.
    • During the solo exam (30 minutes): Sit silently. Watch for clock management (should wrap in 28 min). Note one moment where the candidate seems to be using a move you drilled together (or abandoning it).
    • During the debrief: Contribute one concrete observation: "I watched them write; they DID [restate their argument/name a counterargument] like we practiced" or "I noticed they went back to [old pattern] when the prompt got hard." One sentence, evidence, no cheerleading.
