Week 2: the music the trailers were cut to

Writing the music the trailers were cut to.

Sound carries a trailer, so the music came first. Each crew made its track before any picture existed, built to carry the beats of a trailer, then cut the edit to the finished music rather than stretching music over a locked edit. Students wrote a sound in plain words, listened to what came back, and rewrote the description until it fit, learning to generate all three things a film needs to be heard: the score that carries the mood, the sound effects that sell a door or a footstep, and the voiceover that narrates. Every cue plays on its own, next to the prompt that produced it.

How a prompt becomes a cue

  1. 1 · The crew writes a promptin the password-gated class studio at /lab/audio. No accounts, no app installs.
  2. 2 · Our server signs the callthe ElevenLabs API key never reaches a student browser; a SvelteKit action proxies every request.
  3. 3 · ElevenLabs generatesmusic, voiceover, SFX or a designed synthetic voice, never a clone of a real person.
  4. 4 · Guardrails cap the spendhard per-call ceilings of 500 characters of voiceover, 80 s of music and 22 s of SFX, plus a per-session generation cap.
  5. 5 · The mp3 lands in the crew's Slackcaptioned with its prompt. This page is a snapshot of those channels. Nothing here is hand-picked or re-edited.

Reading the prompts: the craft tags

Every track shows the student's verbatim prompt. Tags are automatic pattern checks on that text: evidence of technique, not grades. Watch them accumulate down a crew's track list: that accumulation is the learning.

Every cue, sorted by what it sounds like. The genre is read from the student's own prompt, the words they wrote to make it.
