The Oscairs

The Premiere

Overview

Assembling, presenting and evaluating a finished trailer. Students cut to the soundtrack, build a one-page promotional site, and defend their creative choices at a live premiere judged against a shared evaluation spine.

  • 01 By the end, you can Critique and cut the finished trailer to match the soundtrack, giving feedback in the fixed format — attention, best cut, one fix.
  • 02 By the end, you can Build a one-page promotional site with ChatGPT that reaches the trailer without scrolling and sounds like the film.
  • 03 By the end, you can Show a shot before and after with the exact instructions used, explaining what each change did.
  • 04 By the end, you can Combine both into a rehearsed 4–5 minute premiere where every team member speaks and defends their choices.
  1. Finishing the Cut
    Applied craft
    • Warm-up Spot The Mismatch Show two clips side by side and have the class pick which one has the wrong colour or mood.
  2. Cheap vs Expensive Models
    AI concepts
    • Game Blind Model Taste Test Show pairs of clips or text where one came from a cheap AI model and one from an expensive one, let the class vote on which is better without knowing the labels, then reveal the answers.
    • Debate Good Enough On Trial Split the class into two teams, one arguing the cheap model is good enough for their film and one arguing the expensive model is worth the extra cost, using real output as evidence.
    • Worksheet Score The Output Give students a scorecard that rates each model's clip on quality, speed, and cost so they can pick one and write down why it was the best choice.
  3. Promo Websites and Slide Decks
    Tool teaching
    • Worksheet One Screen Pitch Sketch the top of the film's promo web page on paper before building anything.
    • Build Brief The Site Use ChatGPT to build the film's promo website, rewriting your instructions until it sounds like the film.
  4. Presentation Prep and Skills
    Applied craft
    • Warm-up Table Topics Warm Up Each student draws a surprise question about their film and speaks about it for thirty seconds without preparing, to shake off nerves before rehearsing.
    • Role-play Two Stars And A Wish One team runs part of its premiere pitch while the watching teams write down two things that worked and one thing to improve, then read them out.
    • Simulation Beat The Clock Run Through Teams do a full timed rehearsal of the premiere with a stopwatch, aiming to land between four and five minutes with every member speaking at least once.
  5. The OscAIrs Premiere
    Assessment
    • Discussion Name The Fix After each film the class gives feedback in three fixed steps: best moment, best cut, one thing to fix.

K Knowledge · what you know
Six items are brought to the stage, including a promotional website saved as one working file and the finished trailer.
Four named jobs are given out before work starts. A task with nobody's name on it will not get done by the deadline.
Time on stage is 4 to 5 minutes. The practice run beforehand is required.
Judging follows three questions: does the movement add meaning or only movement; is there a visible error in the generated image; does the shot do its job in the story.
You can only tell if the mood matches across shots from different AI tools when you place them side by side. Nobody spots the mismatch by looking at one shot alone.
Useful feedback follows a set method: name what grabs attention, name the best cut, name one thing to fix.
A promotional website grabs attention in the part you see without scrolling: something that grabs interest, the trailer, and one clear thing to do next. Anything further down the page is extra, not the main pitch.
A premiere is performed out loud, not read from notes. Every team member knows their part and when to hand over to the next person. The practice run is where surprises are removed, not the stage.
S Skills · what you can do
Present the film at the OscAIrs and explain your choices. point w2d5-s2-p2
Review a finished cut in a set format: what grabs attention, the best cut, one thing to fix.
Build a promotional page where visitors reach the trailer without scrolling.

Before/After/Prompt/Change Evidence Iteration is proven with all four together: the before clip, the after clip, the prompt, and the change that produced the difference.
Evaluation Spine Does the motion add information or only motion; is any artefact visible; does the shot serve its beat.
Named Roles Before Work Begins A job with no name on it will not exist at the deadline.
Stage-Time Discipline 4–5 minutes on stage; the dress run is not optional.

Show Before, After, and Change

Improvement is shown with a before clip, an after clip, the instructions used, and the change that caused the difference.

Brief Beats Generic Copy

By default, ChatGPT writes generic marketing words. The website is only good once ChatGPT is given the film's own tone, one-line summary, and one action to ask for.

ChatGPT Builds a Website

ChatGPT can build a complete promotional website, saved as one working file, from a plain description of the film.

Check Links Before Screening

Websites built by ChatGPT look finished but often still have broken links and leftover placeholder text. Every link and claim is checked before the site is shown.

Structured Audio-Direction Prompting

Writing a role-based, constraint-bound prompt (role, duration, mood) to direct AI audio/voice generation. Evidence: "You are a sound engineer. make music for a horror movie trailer. It must be 60 [seconds]..." (editing-to-sound).

LoRA Training & Prompt-Driven Image Control

Training a LoRA matched to the target image-generation model, and diagnosing prompt failures when generated characters/scenes go wrong. Evidence: "you must generate a LoRA in the same model as youre going to use for image generation" and "we had problem here because of a bad prompt we did, and started making so many strange faces" (image-generation/animating-stills).

This deliverable is where students demonstrate

  1. E Assemble, present and evaluate a finished trailer
    Look out for
    • Matching mood (Objective 1): Clips from different AI tools are compared and matched, and no mismatch in mood remains in the finished trailer.
    • Feedback format (Objective 2): Feedback given in the room says what grabs attention, says the best cut, and says one thing to fix, with no open-ended comments like 'it was cool'.
    • Evidence of improvement (Objective 3): A shot is shown before and after, with the exact instructions used and a plain explanation of what the change did.
    • Promotional website (Objectives 4 and 5): The website reaches the trailer without scrolling, with something that grabs attention and one action, the words sound like the film rather than a template, and there are no broken links or leftover placeholder text.
    • Premiere delivery (Objective 6): The premiere runs 4 to 5 minutes, is rehearsed, every team member speaks, and the team explains its choices when asked.
01
