There is something strangely comforting about the fact that humans have always believed the next invention would end civilization. As the painter Paul Delaroche is often quoted as saying after the invention of photography, "From today, painting is dead." Today, we hear remarkably similar claims: "AI will take over all human jobs," or "Calculators will eliminate mathematics." The words change, but the fear remains almost identical—it simply arrives in a different century.
Maybe panic is simply part of innovation.
History shows that society often reacts to technological breakthroughs with anxiety before learning how to adapt. A report from the Center for Data Innovation argues that public concern surrounding generative AI follows a familiar historical pattern, where fear often outpaces evidence and understanding.
When photography was invented, many artists feared painting was finished. It wasn't. Instead, artists adapted, explored new artistic movements, and continued creating. AI feels remarkably similar. Every breakthrough sparks predictions that humans will become obsolete, but reality is usually far more complicated.
When generative AI became widely available in 2022, people embraced it. Students used it to study, programmers used it to debug code more efficiently, and businesses began automating repetitive tasks. Then the headlines arrived. Suddenly, everyone—from writers to doctors—was supposedly about to be replaced.
The reality is far less dramatic. According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, AI and related technologies are expected to displace approximately 92 million jobs by 2030 while creating 170 million new ones, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs. Rather than eliminating work altogether, AI is expected to reshape many professions and create new opportunities alongside technological change.
Public concern is also measurable. According to the Ipsos AI Monitor 2025, roughly half of respondents worldwide worry that AI could replace their job within the next decade. Whether or not that prediction comes true, the survey illustrates how quickly anxiety spreads whenever a new technology emerges.
Researchers at the Yale Budget Lab reach a similar conclusion. Their analysis suggests that AI's impact will differ significantly across occupations, with many jobs being transformed instead of completely replaced. The greatest changes are likely to occur in specific tasks rather than entire professions.
Our journey in Seoul makes this debate feel especially real. Robot baristas, self-service supermarkets, and delivery robots are everywhere. Even so, cafés remain full of people, restaurant staff solve problems that machines cannot handle, and customers still look for human assistance whenever something goes wrong. Technology has certainly changed daily life, but it has not replaced the people behind it.
That may be because most jobs involve much more than repetitive tasks or writing a good prompt. They require communication, empathy, creativity, and sound judgment—qualities that AI still struggles to replicate consistently.
History suggests that technology rarely replaces humanity; instead, it changes how we work. The printing press did not end storytelling, photography did not kill painting, and computers did not eliminate accountants. Instead, each innovation changed the nature of those professions while creating new opportunities. AI will likely follow the same pattern by automating repetitive work while making distinctly human skills even more valuable.
So perhaps the real question is not whether AI will replace humans.
It is whether humans can stop panicking long enough to learn how to work with it.
If history is any guide, we will panic first.
Then we will adapt.
Just as we always have.
Every technological revolution eventually finds its balance. After the uncertainty comes adaptation, and after the storm comes progress. AI will likely be no different. The challenge is not resisting change but learning to use these new tools wisely.
As we discussed in class today, perhaps the future is about finding balance—not choosing between humans or AI, but combining the strengths of both. That could mean blending online and offline learning, using AI to provide quick feedback on assignments so students can work on improving their skills. References
